Trekking in Ladakh – How to Prepare For the trekking?
The beautiful, high altitude and popular chadar trek cost is not as easy as it looks. This trek has some of the most challenging obstacles that a mountain climber may encounter. So every year since I have been a fan of trekking and backpacking, I always try to do this trek with as much preparation as possible. I have learned a lot about altitude and the mountains in general. Here are the few things that I learned on my last (and first ever) visit to Ladakh:
How To Prepare Yourself For A Ladakh Trek
Sam K.Pandepa mentions – The best time to do Ladakh is in the spring or in the fall when the weather is perfect for trekking and climbing. Unfortunately, the weather in Ladakh is rather unpredictable – you never know how cold it can get in the afternoon. It also never fails that in the middle of summer, the temperature at the top of the mountains suddenly goes up to a height of minus 14 degrees Celsius. It was also very cold there during the winter. So, the best seasons to do Ladakh trekking are the spring and fall, but don’t expect the weather to remain nice for more than a day or two.
After getting acclimatized, the next step would be to prepare for the trek. For me, one of the most important things to prepare for in Ladakh is a good Ladakh trekking checklist. I made a full out mountain climber’s kit when I went to Ladakh and I had a spare pair for my off-peak journey. This way, even when the climatic conditions were not good enough to allow me to go ahead of schedule, I could at least keep myself warm and dry by carrying a pair of Leh Tuk coveralls and a headlamp.
