The Straight Smiles Children Get Help Their Self-Esteem and Well-Being

Crooked teeth and an imbalanced facial structure can cause dental and health issues later in life. It’s important to get these problems fixed early to prevent future problems.

Kids can be treated at almost any age, but the earlier they start treatment, the more effective their results will be. Children typically visit an orthodontist for their first checkup around ages six and seven, coinciding with the time when their permanent teeth have begun to erupt. This is the best time to catch any issues, such as overcrowding, that can be addressed.

Braces for Kids: When to Start and What Parents Should Know

Orthodontic treatments for kids include braces, which use wires and rubber bands to align teeth. Most commonly, kids get traditional metal braces, which consist of stainless steel brackets that are connected with a wire and held in place with colored rubber bands. These braces are the most common and cost-effective. They can be easily adjusted and offer a good option for kids because the bands can be changed to match their mood or outfits.

Some orthodontists also offer clear removable braces for kids, which don’t have any metal brackets or wires and work much like a retainer. They’re a great choice for kids who are worried about their appearance or have any special needs, including dietary restrictions. Clear braces for kids can be made of transparent ceramic or white plastic, which blend in with their teeth and are less noticeable than traditional metal braces. Other options, such as lingual braces that go behind the teeth, are also available.
